Summer youth programs abound at Nicholls

THIBODAUX - Nicholls State University will offer the following, non-credit activities for youth throughout the upcoming summer months:

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

This program encourages learning in a creative environment and focuses on science, social studies, language arts, mathematics, art and physical education. There will be no promotions or failures. Nicholls education majors will utilize these classes for observation and participation activities under the direction of credentialed supervising teachers. A mandatory parent orientation will be held Wednesday, May 28, at 7 p.m. in Peltier Auditorium. This program will meet five days a week for seven weeks.

Ages: Youth entering kindergarten through sixth grade

Dates: June 9 - July 25

Time: 8:30 - 11:50 a.m.

Fee: $230

ART CLASSES

Instructor Billy Bellanger and his assistants will provide a variety of art experiences for young students to work with several different media. Art projects are hands-on and always take-home. Project examples include clay, sculpture, painting, drawing and printmaking.

Dates: June 16 - 20

* Session 1: 8:30 - 11:30 a.m., 6 - 8 year olds

* Session 2: 12:30 - 3:30 p.m., 9 - 12 year olds

BASKETBALL

  • J. P. Piper’s Boys Day Camp

This camp will include four days of instruction, games and contests. The practice schedule includes warm-up, stretching, conditioning and skill development stations (ball handling, passing, shooting, defense and rebounding). Campers will be grouped according to age and skill level. Highlights of the camp include prizes and awards for contests, including knock-out, beat the pro, hot shot, free throws and games. Each camper will receive a J. P. Piper Camp Certificate of Participation.

Ages: Boys entering second through eighth grades

Dates: June 2 - 5

Time: 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Fee: $150 (includes T-shirt and ball)

  • Colonels FUN-damentals Day Camp

This high-energy camp is for players who are just beginning as well as those looking to sharpen their basketball skills. Fundamental skills of ball handling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defensive concepts will be emphasized during each session. Nicholls coaches and players will be on hand to take an individual interest in each player regardless of her level on the court

Ages: Girls entering second through sixth grades

Dates: June 30 - July 2

Time: 9 a.m. - noon

Fee: $110 (includes camp T-shirt)

  • Lady Colonels Skills Camp

This challenging overnight camp is designed to prepare players for their high school varsity teams. Each player will have the opportunity to improve skills needed for her individual position. Post players will receive instruction on establishing post position, rebounding, individual moves and post defense. Guards will be instructed on ball handling, passing, moving without the ball, perimeter defense and all other aspects of guard play

Ages: Girls entering grades seven through 12.

Dates: July 6 - 8

Check-in time: 5 p.m.

Fee: $150 (includes a camp T-shirt)

Place: Stopher Gymnasium

What to bring: basketball, shoes, athletic shorts, T-shirts, towels, bed linens, pillow, alarm clock and a willingness to learn.

CHAMBER MUSIC CAMPS

Depending on available instrumentation, students will participate in small ensembles ranging from trios, quartets and quintets, to full choirs of instruments. The camp will close with a combined concert.

  • Woodwind & Brass Day Camp Session 1 - High School

Participants must state what instrument they will be playing during registration, which will close June 2.

Ages: Students entering grades nine though 12

Dates: June 9 -13
Time: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Fee: $175 (without private lesson) or $200 (which includes a one-hour private lesson with Paula Van Goes, Instructor of Music, Woodwinds or Cristina Mendoza, Instructor of Music, Brass and Assistant Director of Bands at Nicholls State University.) Daily lunch is included in fee.

  • Woodwind & Brass Day Camp Session 2 - Middle School

Participants must state what instrument they will be playing during registration, which will close June 9.

Ages: Students entering grades six through eight.

Dates: June 16 - 20

Time: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

CHIP DURHAM BASEBALL CAMPS

  • 2008 Summer Showcase

Nicholls baseball coaches and players would like to invite all baseball players with aspirations of playing college and/or professional baseball to the 2008 Summer Showcase. This professional-style skills showcase will allow participants to display their running, hitting, throwing and fielding abilities to numerous college and professional scouts. Players will also receive information from Brian Thomas, head strength and conditioning coach, who will lecture on proper stretching and weight-lifting techniques as well as proper dietary habits. Previous collegiate participants include Copiah-Lincoln Community College, Bossier Parish Community College, Meridian Community College, Pearl River Community College, Millsaps College, Delgado Community College and Baton Rouge Community College. Scouts from the Pittsburgh Pirates and Tampa Bay Rays have also been in attendance.

  • Summer Youth Camp

This day camp will allow campers to further enhance their baseball skills. Nicholls’ baseball coaching staff will be on hand to teach the fundamentals and assist campers in their overall knowledge of the game, including hitting, pitching, catching, fielding, throwing and base running. Coach Durham and his assistants will be on site each day. Campers should wear baseball attire and bring a bat and glove.

Ages: Boys, 6 - 13 years

Dates: June 24 - 26

Time: 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Fee: $75 before June 1, $100 for late/walk-up registrations (includes a camp t-shirt)

  • Coach D’s Optimum Performance Camps

1) Speed, Acceleration and Agility Camp (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

2) Strength and Conditioning Camp (Mondays and Wednesdays)

These camps are for youths wanting to improve performance in sports, recreation and life. Coach Dennis Guillot’s training programs are for anyone and everyone, regardless of gender, skill level or athletic or fitness goals. Participants will be pushed to their athletic limits in a positive, motivating environment. All participants must complete a medical informed consent and release form. A mandatory parent meeting will be held on Thursday, June 5, at 6 p.m. in the Le Bijou Theater of the Bollinger Memorial Student Union.

Ages: 13 and up

Dates: Session 1: June 9 - 12; Session 2: June 16 - 19; Session 3: June 23 - 26; Session 4: June 30 - July 3

Time: 8 - 9:30 a.m.

Fees per session: $35 per camp, $65 for both camps

Fee for all 4 sessions: $250

Place: Camp will meet in Shaver Gymnasium on the first day.

COLONEL CAMPER

This program is for campers who cannot get enough of the fun at Nicholls. Featuring a simple registration format with the busy parent in mind, Colonel Camper allows participants to attend Academic Enrichment, lunch options, sports and activities camps.

Dates: June 9 - July 25

Time: 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Fee: $720 - 20% savings over separate registrations (includes two camp T-shirts)

Place: Drop-off at Academic Enrichment classroom, pick-up from Shaver Gym Lobby.

Registration: Pre-payment plans are available; however, payment in full is required before the first day of camp.

COLONEL IN TRAINING PROGRAM (CIT)

The CIT (junior counselor) program is for young adults who want to join in the fun - and who can handle some responsibility. CITs will assist the Sports and Activities staff throughout the summer and participate in all camp activities. To register, students must submit a resume or brief description of relative experience along with the registration form and payment.

Time: 1 - 5 p.m.

Fee: $175

CREATIVE LEARNER PROGRAM

The mission of the Nicholls Creative Learner Program is to inspire, challenge and encourage students to maximize their capabilities using a liberal arts background that will enhance leadership, creativity and intellectual growth. Criteria for program admission include a teacher/principal recommendation and an application.

Ages: Students entering grades six through 12.

Dates: June 9 - 27

Time: 7:30 a.m. - noon

Application fee: $25 (non-refundable)

Tuition: $215 (due by June 1st)

CREATIVE SCHOLARS CAMP

The Louisiana Center for Dyslexia and Related Learning Disorders is looking for students with characteristics of dyslexia who are interested in improving their reading comprehension, writing and math skills. This is the perfect opportunity to learn interesting, effective ways to get the most from reading and to learn effective techniques for improving writing and math skills. This is a day camp, but an overnight option is available for an additional fee. Parents must submit proper medical forms two weeks prior to camp check-in. Space is limited, and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants must provide evidence that they have been identified within their schools as having characteristics of dyslexia.

Ages: Students entering grades five through nine (age not to exceed 16)

Dates: July 15 - 19

Time: 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Place: Max Charter School Building

Application Fee: $25, due by July 1st (non-refundable once acceptance has been granted)

Day Camp Fee: $225*

Overnight Camp Fee: $395*

JAY THOMAS’ ELITE CAMP

This camp will offer high school athletes entering their junior or senior year the opportunity to be instructed by the Nicholls football coaching staff. Fundamentals and techniques will be taught for quarterbacks, wide receivers, running backs, offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebackers and defensive backs. Football cleats and tennis shoes are required. No helmets or other football pads will be used. Participants should arrive on campus between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. for check-in.

Date: June 23

Time: 1:30 - 5:30 p.m.

Fee: $25 (includes a camp T-shirt)

KARATE CAMP

This week-long camp will give children the chance to learn about karate, build self-confidence and have lots of fun. Participants will learn karate skills, self-defense techniques and the importance of respect. The highlight of this camp is a special presentation at the end of the week wherein students will have a chance to show family and friends everything they have learned. Awards will be given at this presentation. Comfortable clothes and tennis shoes should be worn.

Ages: 6 - 13 years

Dates: July 28 - August 1

Time: 9 a.m. - noon

Fee: $69 (includes a camp T-shirt)

NICHOLLS CHEERLEADER CAMP

Youth are invited to yell, jump and flip with the Nicholls cheerleaders at the Nicholls Cheerleader Camp. Campers will learn basic cheerleading skills, including motion technique, jumps and stunting. The cheerleaders will also teach cheer and dance routines that campers will perform at the show-off performance on the last day of camp. Campers who complete the program will be featured at a Nicholls home football game during the 2008 football season.

Ages: 4 - 18 years

Dates: July 14 - 16

Time: 1 - 5 p.m.

Fee: $60 (includes a camp T-shirt)

PERFORMING ARTS CAMP

Director Pat Crochet promises another summer of fun-filled theater instruction with the production of “Alice in Wonderland.” In small groups, campers will learn voice and projection, stage combat, stage movement and pantomime, improvisation, characterization and stage crafts (including prop-making, set-building and make-up). During the first week, auditions will be held for a musical production to be performed at the end of the camp. Rehearsals for the show will be incorporated into the daily camp schedule. A mandatory parent orientation will be held on Tuesday, May 27, at 7 p.m. in Talbot Auditorium. Performance dates will be June 27, 28 and 29.

Ages: Students who have completed grade two will benefit most from camp.

Dates: May 30, 31, June 2 - 6, 9 - 13, 16 - 20, 23 - 26.

Time: 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Fee: $205 (includes a daily snack and a camp T-shirt)

Place: Talbot Auditorium

READY! SET! DANCE!

Campers will have a fun learning experience at this exciting, two-week dance camp. Participants will learn the fundamentals of various dance forms and join in games and drills promoting coordination, flexibility and self confidence. Campers will also have the opportunity to choreograph part of a dance and create costumes for the final performance. A brief parent meeting will be held on the morning of the first day of camp. Parents are invited to the final performance on Saturday, July 19, at 10 a.m.

Ages: Girls, 4 - 14 years

Dates: July 7 - 11, 14 - 18

Time: 9 a.m. - noon

Fee: $124 (includes a camp T-shirt)

SCIENCE ADVENTURES CAMP

  • Extreme Sports

Participants will build a fitness kit - complete with stethoscope, pedometer and lung capacity meter - take a tour of the human body, learn the science behind keeping fit and get a healthy dose of fitness and science as they earn their “Fitness Pins.”

Ages: Youth entering first through sixth grades

Dates: June 9 - 13; Session 1: 8 a.m. - noon; Session 2: 1 - 5 p.m.

Fee: $114 per session (includes science kits, take-home materials, instruction and supervision)

Place: Century Room at John L. Guidry Stadium

  • Science Detective

Participants will build their own detective kits - complete with microscopes, flashlights and Morse code door alarms - and put their tools to the test as they explore the secrets behind magnets, phosphorescence, invisible ink and ice cream.

Campers will ultimately earn their “Science Adventures’ Detective Badges.”

Ages: Youth entering first through sixth grades

  • Gizmos, Gadgets & Goop

Participants will join Gizmo in his secret lab where science and imagination mix to create amazing contraptions. Activities include using an electronics kit to explore the science of batteries, bulbs and buzzers and discovering what puts the glow in glow slime. Full-day campers will design and build motorized K’Nex racers, roller coasters, planes and more, ultimately earning their “Gizmo Inventor Pin.”

Place: Bayou Suite of the Donald G. Bollinger Memorial Student Union, 2nd floor

  • Space & Rocketry 2008

Participants will prepare the solid-fueled High Flyer rocket for Launch Day, watch it return to Earth, make a working telescope and chart the worlds of the solar system - ultimately earning their “Space Explorer Pins.”

Ages: Youth entering first through sixth grades

Dates: July 21 - 25; Session 1: 8 a.m. - noon; Session 2: 1 - 5 p.m.

Fee: $114 per session (includes science kits, take-home materials, instruction & supervision)

Place: Century Room at John L. Guidry Stadium

SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES CAMP

Each five-day session will be packed with fun and exciting activities. Campers will receive instruction in the areas of developmental sports skills and recreational leisure activities. Weekly themes will incorporate activities such as arts and crafts, various athletic activities and swimming. Campers must wear tennis shoes and may not bring money or electronic games.

Ages: 5 - 12 years

Dates: Session I, June 9 - 13; Session II, June 16 - 20; Session III, June 23 - 27;

Session IV, June 30 - July 2; Session V, July 7 - 11; Session VI, July 14 - 18; Session VII, July 21 - 25.

Time: 1 - 5 p.m.Fee: $65 per session ($41 for Session IV) - covers weekly field trips, afternoon snacks and a camp T-shirt.

Place: Students not enrolled in the Colonel Camper Program should be dropped off and picked up at the Shaver Gym Lobby.

BOYS AND GIRLS CAMP (SOCCER)

Players will learn both offensive and defensive fundamentals of soccer. Sessions will focus on positions and the responsibilities of each, including technique and tactical aspects. Nicholls Head Coach Cindy Piper, Assistant Coach Kristen Fillmore and the Colonels soccer players will lead the camp.

Ages: 5 - 12

Dates: June 9 - 12

Time: 9 a.m. - noon

Fee: $85 (includes a camp T-shirt)

Place: Nicholls Soccer Field across from John L. Guidry Stadium

SUMMER OPTIONS PROGRAM

This program is designed to help accommodate childcare needed before and after the Academic Enrichment Program and before Sports and Activities camps. Those who sign up for Summer Options Programs, Academic Enrichment Program, and Sports and Activities Camps can rest assured that their campers will be supervised and entertained daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (985)448-4444.

Place: Drop-off is in front of the Galliano cafeteria, or students will be picked up from their Academic Enrichment class. Students who are not enrolled in Sports and Activities Camp should be picked up from the Shaver Gym Lobby by 1 p.m.

THINK, REMEMBER, WRITE WORKSHOP

The Louisiana Center for Dyslexia and Related Learning Disorders will offer this five-day reading and writing workshop for students. The focus of the workshop is to provide strategies to students who need help with reading comprehension and writing paragraphs and essays.

Time: 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.

TELEVISION WORKSHOP

Participants will learn about the behind-the-scenes workings of a television studio and the making of TV commercials. By the end of the week students will produce, direct and star in their own show. Parents are invited to attend the final production.

Ages: 8 - 16 years

Dates: July 14 - 18

Time: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Fee: $180 (includes daily lunch)

Place: Television Studio in Talbot Hall, Room 107

VOLLEYBALL

  • Girls All Skills Camp

This camp - designed for beginning and intermediate level players - offers instruction and practice in all the fundamentals of volleyball. Sessions will concentrate on individual skills combined with maximum repetitions.

Ages: 13 - 18

Dates: June 23 - 25

Time: 9 am - 4 pm on June 23rd & 24th, 9 am - noon on June 25th

Fee: $125 (includes lunch on June 23 and 24 as well as a camp T-shirt)

Place: Stopher Gymnasium

*An overnight option is available for an additional fee of $65

  • Girls Setter/ Hitter Camp

This camp is intended for experienced players who want to concentrate on the offensive aspects of the game. Setters and hitters will work separately to isolate specific skills and then work together to practice game-like situations. This camp is highly recommended for those on club teams and high school varsity programs. Participants will receive quality instruction, repetition and opportunities to compete. Beginners are encouraged to attend the All Skills camp.

Ages: Grades nine through twelve

Dates: June 25 & 26

Time: 2 - 8:30 p.m. on June 25th, 9 am - 3:30 pm on June 26th

Fee: $125 (includes dinner June 25, lunch June 26 and a camp T-shirt)

  • All Skills Camp

This camp is designed as an introduction to the sport.
