Duo from Nicholls to perform at Kennedy Center

THIBODAUX – The Alexander-Soares Duo of Nicholls State University will perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., Sunday, Aug. 24.

Violinist James Alexander, adjunct instructor of music, and pianist Dr. Luciana Soares, assistant professor of music – both artists in residence at Nicholls – are scheduled to take the stage at 5 p.m., Central Standard Time, to perform works by Leopoldo Miguez, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Liduino Pitombeira.”It is an honor for Nicholls when any faculty member presents on a national scale,” said Dr. Carol Britt, director of the School of Fine Arts at Nicholls. “To have Dr. Soares and Mr. Alexander perform at the Kennedy Center is a very public way to bring attention to Nicholls and to the School of Fine Arts – Division of Music. This attention is a wonderful recruiting opportunity for us. It is all very exciting.”

The Alexander-Soares violin and piano duo was formed in 2005 and has performed in several venues, including the Sala Cecília Meireles, the Theatro José de Alencar, the Conservatório Pernambucano de Música and the Cine Banguê in Brazil; theUniversity of Akron and Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio; and various venues throughout Louisiana and Mississippi.

Alexander is a former principal of the Southwest German and St. Gallen Switzerland Symphony Orchestras. He has performed as a soloist and given master classes throughout Europe, Brazil and the U.S.

Soares has received many awards in national competitions in her native Brazil and appears frequently as both a soloist and collaborative pianist at concert halls throughout Brazil and the U.S. Her solo recording “Brasileira: Piano Music by Brazilian Women” has been released on the Centaur Records label.
