Former congressmen to visit Nicholls campus

THIBODAUX -The Louisiana Center for Women & Government at Nicholls State University will host its first annual Congress to Campus Program, Sunday, March 9, to Tuesday, March 11.

The U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress, partnered with the Stennis Center for Public Service, began the program in 1996, sending bipartisan pairs of former members of Congress to visit college campuses all over the country. For two and a half days, the participants conduct classes, forums, informal meetings with university and community members and interviews with local press and media – all designed to instruct and encourage future leaders.

The former congressmen scheduled to visit Nicholls are Republican Dan Miller of Florida and Democrat Earl Hutto, also of Florida.

Miller was elected to Congress in 1992 and served until 2003, honoring his self-imposed 10-year term limit. He was with President visiting in , Fla., on the morning of the . Currently, Miller teaches at the University of South Florida and is developing the Manasota Institute of Public Policy and Leadership at the Sarasota campus.

Hutto served on the Armed Services Committee and the Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979 to 1995. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he is a former broadcaster, sports director, radio station president, advertising agency owner and legislator in the Florida House of Representatives. Hutto wrote his autobiography, “Captain Supreme Goes to Washington,” in 1997.

Scheduled highlights for Monday, March 10, include a meeting with students in Government 252 – a class taught by Dr. Glenn J. Antizzo, associate professor of history and social sciences – followed by one-on-one interviews with students and a community forum in Gouaux Hall at Nicholls.

On Tuesday, March 11, Miller and Hutto are scheduled to meet with Olinda Ricard, president of the Nicholls Student Government Association, and attend a grand assembly with Larry Howell, associate provost, and Dr. Carroll Falcon, provost and vice president for academic affairs.
