Jindal to address Nicholls graduates

THIBODAUX – Gov. Bobby Jindal is scheduled to deliver the keynote address Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Nicholls State University fall commencement ceremony – slated for 10 a.m. at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center.

Jindal was elected Governor of Louisiana on Oct. 20, 2007, with 54 percent of the vote in the primary, winning 60 of 64 parishes. Sworn in on Jan. 14, 2008, Jindal called special legislative sessions to address such issues as ethics and tax reform. After the session on ethics reform was concluded, the Center for Public Integrity deemed Louisiana’s new financial disclosure law as the strongest in the nation – giving the state a score of 99 out of 100.

Other issues for which Jindal has put forth detailed plans include health care, education, transportation, workforce development and storm recovery.

Born in Baton Rouge in 1971, Jindal graduated from Baton Rouge High School and went on to attend Brown University – and later Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar.

In his extensive professional life, Jindal has served as consultant for McKinsey and Company; Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals; Executive Director of the National Bipartisan Commission on the Future of Medicare; President of the University of Louisiana System; Assistant Secretary for the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services; and U. S. Representative for the 1st District of Louisiana.

In Congress, to which he was re-elected in 2006 with 88 percent of the vote, Jindal was elected Freshman Class President and served on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, the House Committee on Homeland Security and the House Committee on Resources. He also served as Assistant Majority Whip.

The governor and his wife Supriya have three young children.

Following Jindal’s address, Dr. Eugene Dial, vice president for student affairs, will present the honors, and Dr. Carroll Falcon, provost and vice present for academic affairs, will present the candidates for the degrees. Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, university president, will confer the degrees.
