Tuition increase a necessity for Nicholls

THIBODAUX – Beginning in the fall 2008 semester, tuition at Nicholls State University will be increased by $90 per semester for full-time students.

“Although the university does not like to raise tuition, the increase is critical to help maintain the level of education and service Nicholls provides to the region,” said Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, university president. “It is also critical to the funding of faculty and staff requirements, as well as other new initiatives, because Nicholls will receive no new state revenue this year.”

Average tuition at Nicholls is currently 31.2 percent below the average – or $815 per semester below average – of peer institutions in the 15 states comprising the Southern Regional Education Board. As long as the university’s average tuition is more than 20 percent below the Southern Region’s average, Nicholls may raise the tuition five percent per year for the next four years.

The tuition adjustment will be fully covered for recipients of the Taylor Opportunity Programs for Students (TOPS), who accounted for 53.2 percent of first-time freshmen at Nicholls last fall – and the increase in the value of Pell Grants may also cover this additional cost.

Students with extreme hardships resulting from the tuition increase can request a Hardship Fee Exemption via the Nicholls web site at https://www.nicholls.edu/finaid/.
