Video gamers invited to Nicholls tourney

THIBODAUX – High school and college students alike will have the chance to prove their video-gaming abilities at Game Day 2008 – a two-day competition spearheaded by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Nicholls State University.

Sponsored by Dell Computers, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Garage Games and Apress, the event is slated for Friday, Nov. 14, and Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Bollinger Memorial Student Union.

“Players can look forward to testing their talents with games such as ‘Call to Duty 4,’ utilizing three-player teams on PCs, and individually with ‘Super Smash Brothers Brawl’ on the Wii and ‘Halo 3′ on the Xbox 360,” said Dr. Kent White, Game Day coordinator and associate professor of computer science. “This competition promises to be both fun and challenging, so I encourage all eligible players to register as soon as possible.”

The Friday portion of the contest, scheduled from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., is limited to Nicholls students. Registration is $15 per player and includes a T-shirt. Check-in time is 2 p.m.

The Saturday tourney, slated for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., is limited to gamers age 13 to 18. With a 9 a.m. check-in time, the registration fee is $25 and includes lunch and a T-shirt.

Both tournaments will feature door prizes and competition awards.
