Women and Government Center announces fall institute

THIBODAUX – The Louisiana Center for Women and Government will host its fall leadership institute in Baton Rouge on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14 and 15. “Strategic Command: Tactics that Win,” is the theme.

“Leadership is a battle, and you can be a winner,” said Dr. Laura Badeaux, director of the center. “Our fall institute offers an impressive array of presenters, speakers and activities that will help participants learn smart ways to lead and achieve success.”

To be held at the Holiday Inn Select, located at 4728 Constitution Ave. in Baton Rouge, Saturday’s sessions will feature: Nicole Nowlen, a former Columbine High School student who survived the 1999 massacre and has shared her story with audiences across the United States; Dr. Sam Bacharach, Cornell University professor and best-selling author of the books “Get Them on Your Side” and “Keep Them on Your Side”; Beth Courtney, president and CEO, Louisiana Public Broadcasting; Carl Redman, executive editor, Baton Rouge Advocate; Ed Buggs, Baton Rouge talk radio host; Eric Paulsen, WWL-TV New Orleans news anchor; Laura Buchtel, WWL-TV meteorologist;

Jay Dardenne, Louisiana secretary of state; Fred Dent, former Louisiana commissioner of financial institutions; Phyllis Mayo, former special assistant on women’s policy to former Gov. Kathleen Blanco; and Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, president of Nicholls State University.

hotakotb-1.jpgSaturday’s keynote speaker will be former New Orleans newscaster Hoda Kotb, NBC News journalist and Today show co-anchor. Supriya Jindal, first lady of Louisiana, is the invited honorary chair.

American Majority Inc. of Louisiana will provide media relations training sessions and is one of five partners for the institute. The others are: the Governor’s Office on Women’s Policy, Lafourche Commission on Women, Louisiana Lottery and Louisiana Women’s Foundation.

In addition to the Saturday program, a $50 registration fee allows participants to attend a Friday reception with Gov. Bobby Jindal and Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu at the Louisiana State Archives, located at 3851 Essen Lane in Baton Rouge. Former Govs. Mike Foster, Buddy Roemer and David Treen are scheduled to attend. Honorary chairs are former Gov. Kathleen Blanco and former Lt. Gov. Melinda Schwegmann.

The Louisiana Center for Women and Government (LCWG), housed at Nicholls State University, develops programs to make women more aware of the governmental process in general and urges women to participate actively in that process on an ongoing basis. The center sponsors internships in state government offices in Baton Rouge for college students from around the state of Louisiana.
