THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University Police officers completed a series of advanced training programs over the past year, including crime-scene collection of DNA evidence, identification of social drugs common to a college campus, current domestic violence laws and maintenance of the safety and security of spectators at university sporting events.
The training programs were sponsored by the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Eastern District in New Orleans; U.S. Department of Justice; President’s Initiative to Advance Justice through DNA Technology; and National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security.
“Trainings of this nature are critical when officers are called to respond to crimes where the identification and collection of essential evidence is needed,” Craig Jaccuzzo, director of university police, said. “Too often, patrol officers in America accidentally contaminate a crime scene by simply walking through the area where the crime occurred. Proper training prevents these errors.”
Jaccuzzo said police officers at Nicholls also train annually with firearms; CPR and first aid; self defense; and receive updates on new and existing laws. University Police also recently joined the Law Enforcement Training Network’s eLearning program, funded by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center’s Rural Policing Institute.
“Certainly it should come as no surprise that the Nicholls campus remains the safest college campus in the state of Louisiana,” Jaccuzzo said.
