Spring commencement at Nicholls breaks records

THIBODAUX – Nicholls State University held commencement exercises Saturday, May 15, awarding 565 degrees to 554 students who completed coursework during the spring semester.

It was the largest spring commencement in university history – and with the resulting total of 1,240 degrees awarded since summer 2009, the 2009-10 academic year boasted the most degrees awarded for any year since Nicholls was founded in 1948.

The spring 2010 commencement also put Nicholls past the 40,000-degree mark in terms of the total number of degrees conferred since the university’s founding.

The degrees awarded on Saturday were conferred and presented by Dr. Stephen T. Hulbert, university president. Dr. Carmelita P. Escalante, Nicholls alumna and professor of medicine at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, delivered the keynote address.
