Barbara Pierce Bush to deliver keynote address

THIBODAUX – High-achieving girls entering grades 8 through 11 in the 2011-12 school year are invited to apply for admission to the Louisiana Girls Leadership Academy at Nicholls State University.

Sponsored by the Louisiana Center for Women and Government, headquartered at Nicholls, the academy is slated for June 12-15, 2011. The application deadline is Friday, May 6.

Themed “Light the Torch and Lead,” the academy is designed to educate major potential leaders in community and public service through responsible leadership. Participants will network with peers and be mentored by experienced women who will help them develop the knowledge and skills necessary for future leadership roles. Specific areas of instruction include communication, situational leadership, relationship building, managing peer pressure and conflict, political competence, campaign strategy and public policy awareness.

Barbara Pierce Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush, will deliver the keynote address on Wednesday, June 15. A member of UNICEF’s Next Generation steering committee, Bush is also the CEO and co-founder of Global Health Corps, serves on the board of directors for Covenant House International and is a Draper Richards Foundation Social Entrepreneur. She graduated from Yale University in 2004 with a degree in humanities.

The academy also includes an annual leadership service project – this year focusing on energy and the environment.

Academy participants are competitively selected by a committee of the Louisiana Center for Women and Government. The application fee of $60 will be refunded if the applicant is not chosen to attend. For applicants chosen to attend, no additional fees are required.
