Nicholls dyslexia center to sponsor conference in Shreveport

THIBODAUX – The Louisiana Center for Dyslexia and Related Learning Disorders, headquartered at Nicholls State University, will cosponsor a statewide dyslexia conference in Shreveport, La., on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Titled “Unmasking Their Potential, Fall 2011,” the conference is open to parents, teachers and other professionals who work with students bearing the characteristics of dyslexia and other specific learning disorders. The event will feature 21 breakout sessions on topics including study strategies; testing and evaluations; teaching struggling writers; college preparation; the emotional side of dyslexia; assistive technologies; struggling with math; the importance of handwriting; how to communicate with a child’s school; and how to identify dyslexia.

Cosponsored by the Louisiana Branch of The International Dyslexia Association, the conference will be held at Broadmoor Middle Laboratory School, 441 Atlantic Avenue, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Dr. Susan Hall, a consultant, trainer and author who specializes in teacher training and early reading, will deliver the keynote address, “Implementing Response to Intervention: Practical Tips.”
