Long to headline lecture series at Nicholls

THIBODAUX – The 2012 Bonnie J. Bourg Lecture Series and Women’s History Month Luncheon and Awards Presentation at Nicholls State University will feature Dr. Alecia Long, associate professor of history at Louisiana State University. The annual series – memorializing Bourg, a founding member of the Nicholls faculty who served as an empowering role model for women – brings nationally distinguished women to Nicholls to share their insights and experience.

Long, author of “The Great Southern Babylon: Sex, Race, and Respectability in New Orleans, 1865-1920,” won the 2005 Julia Cherry Spruill Publication Prize for best book published on Southern women’s history.

Slated for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 22, in Peltier Auditorium, the lecture is free and open to the public.

The annual luncheon and awards presentation will follow at noon in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Bollinger Memorial Student Union. Three women – a Nicholls student, a Nicholls faculty or staff member and a member of the community, each of whom have been nominated by Nicholls faculty, staff or students – will receive awards recognizing their contributions to the cause of empowerment for women.

The luncheon is $16 per ticket and will include Caesar salad, Cajun grilled chicken with Alfredo sauce over penne pasta and lemon icebox pie. Call 985-448-4080 by noon Friday, March 16, to make reservations.

The Bonnie Bourg lecture and luncheon, coordinated and co-sponsored by the Nicholls Women’s Resource and Services Office, are part of 14th annual Jubilee: A Festival of the Arts and Humanities at Nicholls – held every spring to raise the level of awareness in the arts and humanities for the Nicholls community and the southeast region of Louisiana.
