Nicholls Chamber Singers to perform April 22

THIBODAUX – The Nicholls State University Chamber Singers will present “Love Song Waltzes and Other Love Stories” at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 22, in the Danos Theater in Talbot Hall on campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Chamber Singers ensemble routinely performs a variety of choral literature appropriate for a small vocal ensemble, with a repertoire ranging from classical works to vocal jazz.

The featured work of the evening will be “New Love Song Waltzes” by Johannes Brahms. Originally written in German in 1874 as Neue Liebeslieder, Op. 65, and usually performed by choirs, the 15-song set was initially intended for a vocal quartet with a piano duet.

Nicholls pianists scheduled to accompany the Chamber Singers are Michelle Parro, staff accompanist, and Donna Sammarco, instructor of piano. This accompaniment will be performed on Nicholls’ two nine-foot Steinway concert grand pianos – the first time both instruments will be used in performance together. Dr. Kenneth Klaus, professor of music and director of choral activities, will direct the performance.

The “other love stories” mentioned in the concert’s title will include the humorous “Love Lost,” four satirical poems on love set to music by Paul Sjolund; “To________”, a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley set to music by Kenneth Blanchard Klaus; “Fa una Canzona,” by Italian Renaissance composer Orazio Vecchi; and “The Turtle Dove,” an English folk song arranged by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The latter selection will feature tenor soloist Joshua Martin, junior vocal music education major from Houma.
