THIBODAUX – The Louisiana Center for Dyslexia and Related Learning Disorders, headquartered at Nicholls State University, in partnership with Baton Rouge community leaders is inviting the public to attend an information session in Baton Rouge on Monday, Sept. 17. Attendees will learn about plans for a new charter school specifically designed for students with dyslexia.
The proposed Louisiana Key Academy, if approved by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, will open in fall 2013 at LSU’s Innovation Park. The school will initially admit kindergarten through second-grade students. Each year thereafter, additional grade levels will be added up to the fifth grade. Enrollment will be free.
“The purpose of this information session is basically to inform parents and recruit students,” said Karen Chauvin, director of the dyslexia center at Nicholls. “We’re especially hoping to see parents of children who have either been diagnosed with dyslexia or show signs of the disorder. The Louisiana Key Academy’s mission is simple – to make sure children learn to read so that they can reach their full potential.”
The information session is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the LSU College of Business Administration on the Nicholson Drive Extension.
