THIBODAUX – From Pilates to jogging to kickboxing, the almost-complete Harold J. Callais Memorial Recreation Center at Nicholls State University will offer students, faculty and staff a variety of fitness and wellness programs.

Kathryn Harrell, fitness and wellness coordinator at Nicholls, said the programs will include “Body Pump” – a weights and cardio regimen; “Body Flow” – featuring yoga, Pilates and tai chi; “Body Combat” – mainly kickboxing; “Couch to 5K” – a progressive jogging course for beginners; “Boot Camp” – a structured, guided workout for people of all fitness levels; “Fit Freshmen,” designed to keep incoming students healthy; and Zumba. Rec center personnel will also work with the Nicholls dietetics program and Counseling Center to schedule health seminars in the facility’s 35-seat classroom.

Harrell said programs, free of charge for rec center members, will be scheduled at convenient times for university personnel and students – specifically, during the lunchtime hours and from 4 to 8 p.m. on weekdays. A final schedule of programs has yet to be issued, but Harrell anticipates 20 to 25 classes per week, many taught by certified instructors, mostly students.

Michael Matherne, director of campus recreation, said the rec center’s membership will be limited to Nicholls affiliations and not open to the general public.

“Competition with area businesses is absolutely not a goal of this university,” Matherne said. “Rest assured that the Nicholls rec center will have strict membership policies, and we will stick to them. Details regarding fees and membership levels will be forthcoming.”

Located near the intersection of Bowie Road and Ardoyne Drive, the rec center is expected open in August or September. For a live-cam construction update, go to www.nicholls.edu/recreation/photos.
