New Nicholls Scholarship for First Generation Students Endowed

Michael and Christine Bourgeois Endowed 1st Generation Scholarship 2014
THIBODAUX — A new scholarship will be available to first-year students entering Nicholls State University thanks to a generous donation from two Nicholls alumni and ExxonMobil.

The scholarship fund was established with a donation from Michael and Christine Bourgeois, both Nicholls alumni, from Chackbay. Their donation was matched by ExxonMobil, Michael’s former employer, for a total of $60,000.

“My wife and I were both the first in our family to graduate from college, and we were excited for the opportunity to help students like ourselves,” Michael said.

The Michael C. and Christine P. Bourgeois First Generation Endowed Scholarship will be available to first-generation college students from Ward 6 (Chackbay) in Lafourche Parish who graduated from E.D. White, Thibodaux or Houma Christian high schools. Exceptions will be made for home-schooled students who pass the General Education Development exam. Up to three scholarships of no more than $800 will be awarded each fall and spring semester; students may receive the scholarship for up to eight semesters if they continue to meet the scholarship criteria.

The scholarship will be awarded beginning in Fall 2015.
