THIBODAUX — Calling all gumbo cooks: Teams are invited to test their best recipes at Nicholls State University’s Jumbo Gumbo Cook-Off Saturday, March 22.
The Jumbo Gumbo Cook-Off will be held as a part of Nicholls’ annual three-day Swamp Stomp festival, scheduled for Friday, March 21, through Sunday, March 23. Contestants can compete in seafood and non-seafood gumbo categories and the Bayou Best category, featuring seafood and non-seafood entrees. Awards will be based on votes from regional judges and community participants. Winners will receive a hand-crafted cypress award by artisan Gerald Judice from New Iberia.
There is a $100 entry fee. Teams must register by Monday, March 10. Teams registering after the deadline will pay an added $50 late fee.
The gumbo cook-off gates will open at 12:30 p.m., with competing gumbos being served to the public from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot near John L. Guidry Stadium. The tasting fee is $10, which includes a sample of each gumbo. Children 10 and under will be admitted for free.
