Questions from after Orientation

In our post Orientation survey, some students had some more questions, so we answered them and decided to post them here.  If you have other questions that are not answered here, please contact our office.

  1. When do I need to start paying for my semester?

You should start checking the I-CAN system about mid to late July to see once fees are posted. You will also be receiving an email in your its.nicholls.edu account about fee deadlines. If you are a first-time freshman and are receiving a student loan, you will have to get a deferment. The Office of Financial Aid will contact you with more information as the start of the fall semester approaches.

  1. Do I have to take this class on my schedule?

The short answer is no.The only course that you are required to take in your first semester is your UNIV101 course. However, the classes that you were scheduled into reflect required courses for the major that you applied for when you initially applied to the university. You can drop and add classes on the I-CAN system. But be careful, make sure you can add a class before you drop one. With the Internet, it is possible that as soon as you drop a class, someone else will be registering into it.

  1. How do I get out of College Algebra? I don't think I'm supposed to be in it.

In order to get out of College Algebra (Math 101), a student needs to either place out of it with the COMPASS test or score a 23 or better on the ACT Math component. If you have questions about your placement, please call our office at 985-448-4507.

  1. How many classes can we take for our freshmen year?Is there summer school?

Any student can take a max of 21 credit hours per semester. That basically means about 7 classes. However, students are encouraged to take around 15 hours (5 classes).

Summer school is available for students and most students take either 3 or 6 hours (1 or 2 classes).

  1. How much does it cost per semester to go Greek?

The cost to go through recruitment varies depending on if you are interested in joining an IFC fraternity, NPC sorority, or NPHC fraternity or sorority. The cost also varies depending on the organization. You are encouraged to visit their websites or go through their respective recruitment cycles for more information. Please visit www.nicholls.edu/greek for more information.

  1. How much time do we have to get to our next class?

You have ten minutes to get from one class to another. That is enough time for most people to walk from one class to the next, even if you have a class in Ayo Hall first and then your second one in White Hall.

  1. I didn't get a chance to get my colonel card during Orientation, so when can I get it?

Since you went to Orientation, you can come in during regular office hours (8:00am-4:30pm) at the Colonel Card Office in the Student Union to get your card.

If you have a question about your schedule, you can contact University College for assistance in changing your schedule. You can do this on your own using the I-CAN system as well.

Go to class first.Afterwards, go to the Office of Student Life and find out about student organizations.Once you have been to your classes, either purchase books in the bookstore or rent your books.Make sure you go to class before you buy your books.Sometimes the professors have specific needs for the books that you will need to see their syllabus for.
