What If Your Student Has a Problem?

Nicholls State University strives to provide excellent programs and services to our students. Although your son or daughter has left home for college, they still need your advice, counsel, encouragement and wisdom. Please use this webpage as a reference if your son or daughter calls you with a concern or issue they don’t know the answer to. Please encourage your son or daughter to ask questions and take responsibility for his or her college career. There may be an occasion over the course of your student’s college career where he or she has a problem. The faculty, staff and administration are here to assist students and to work for their success. For academic matters, such as disputes over grades, your child should talk to his instructor first. In rare instances, clerical or incorrect grade reporting happens and can be corrected by a phone call or e-mail to the instructor. If the instructor is not available, or you are not satisfied with the resolution, the proper chain consists of department head, dean, then Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. While our senior administrators are happy to hear from families of our students, they will follow due process in dealing with concerns.

For nonacademic matters, such as residence hall, financial aid, parking or other issues, the student should report to that particular office and ask for assistance. The Directory of Student Services is a wonderful resource for questions that are not course related. Please keep in mind that there are some matters that cannot be discussed with anyone other than your student according to the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
