Dr. Paula Van Goes
Instructor of Music
Paula Van Goes is more than an instructor of applied woodwinds, music literature, music appreciation, and world music courses at Nicholls State University. She is also an award-winning performer, who has toured internationally.
In January 2007, she taught clarinet classes and conducted a clarinet ensemble at Il Festival de Musica de Camera Centro-Sul e Vale do Salgado in Ceara, Brazil. While in Brazil in 2002, Van Goes gave the South American premiere of Holy Roller by Libby Larsen. Recent performance venues have included the North American Saxophone Alliance Region VI Conference, the Navy Band’s 29th International Saxophone Symposium, and the Brazilian American Cultural Institute in Washington, D.C.
Currently, Van Goes is a member of Duo Elegancia with Jessica Dunnavant, flute. The duo promotes works for saxophone and flute as well as two flutes. Recent performances include the 2008 Florida Flute Fair where the ensemble presented two world premiers, Three Pharaohnic Themes by Halim El-Dabh and Impressoes Sobrais by Liduino Pitombeira, a work dedicated to the duo.
She is a D.M.A. candidate in saxophone performance at the University of Maryland where she studies with Dale Underwood. Her dissertation features concert music for the saxophone by Brazilian composers, including new compositions dedicated to this project.
Prior to coming to Nicholls, Van Goes served as the instructor of woodwinds at Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland.
