The Nicholls Music Academy

The Nicholls Music Academy is open to all levels of study. Students will receive 12 weekly lessons throughout the semester and will be able to participate in a final recital on the stage of Talbot Theater.

Our Instructors

Nicholls State University music majors will participate as interns in the academy. The interns’ instruction and progress will be overseen by a member of the Nicholls music faculty. This will include selection of the student’s repertoire as well as diagnosing and finding solutions for individual student’s problems.

Instruction by members of the Nicholls faculty is available in piano, violin, and brass instruments:

  • Pianist Luciana Soares has received many awards in national competitions in her native Brazil and appears frequently as both soloist and collaborative pianist at concert halls throughout Brazil and the United States. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance and pedagogy from the University of Southern Mississippi and currently serves as assistant professor of piano at Nicholls.
  • James Alexander is a former principal of the Southwest German and St. Gallen Switzerland Symphony Orchestras. He has performed as a soloist and given masterclasses throughout Europe, the United States and Brazil. For the past 10 years, he has been teaching violin at LSU as an artist in residence and is now starting and leading the new string program at Nicholls.
  • Cristina Mendoza is instructor of music in brass at Nicholls, where she also serves as an assistant director of bands and directs the Blue Bayou Big Band. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s in trombone performance and literature, she earned her teacher certification in instrumental music at the University of Texas at Austin. Mendoza currently maintains a large private studio in the Houma/Thibodaux area.
