Hurricane Season 2008

TO:  The University Community

We are now one month into hurricane season 2008 and I wanted to ensure that all members of the Nicholls State University family are aware of on-going institutional efforts to protect their safety as well as that of facilities and services.

The University’s 2008 Hurricane Emergency Plan is available electronically at http://emergency.nicholls.edu.  In the event of a weather related incident, or some such other major event that may interrupt university services, informational advisories will be run on the Nicholls home page at www.nicholls.edu.

In late June, the University tested its new siren system which is located on three separate poles across the main campus.  The new system is now fully operational.  The one sound that community members will hear will notify everyone of an event, the specific nature of which will be explained by a voice announcement following the initial siren blast.  Community members are asked to immediately follow the instructions of the announcement.  Additional forms of communication, in the event of an emergency, include telephone voice and text messaging.

Finally, on July 1st, Mr. Brian Clausen, joined the university community in the capacity as the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.  Mr. Clausen joins Mr. Mike Davis and Mr. Mike Naquin, the current chairs of the Emergency Planning Committee, and Craig Jaccuzzo, Chief of University Police, in providing leadership and direction to safety programming at Nicholls.  Mr. Clausen will assume responsibility for all aspects of emergency management planning.

If you have questions in these matters, please feel free to contact Mr. Clausen at 985-448-4783.
