Removal of a Student Teacher

Criteria for Removal of a Student Teacher

Candidates will be removed from student teaching if:

  • the student teacher violates College of Education policies concerning the student teacher program OR
  • the student teacher violates policies of the participating school or school board OR
  • the performance and/or actions of the student teacher are detrimental to the welfare of the pupils as agreed upon by the supervising teacher, principal, university coordinator and director of student teaching.

Process for Removal of a Student Teacher

  • If one of the above criteria is in question, the university coordinator will inform the director of student teaching.
  • Observations will be made by the university coordinator, the director of student teaching and the supervising principal to assess the situation.
  • After the observations, the director of student teaching will confer with the university coordinator, supervising teacher, principal and student teacher. Upon conclusion of this meeting the student teacher may be allowed a trial period to correct deficiencies if all parties agree.
  • During a trial period, not to exceed two weeks, observations will be made by the director, the principal and the university coordinator. These observations will be conducted to determine the degree of improvement of the student teacher. A conference will be held with the student teacher to inform him/her of his/her status. A written summary will be signed after each conference. At this time the student teacher may be referred to the college’s Retention Committee.
  • If the trial period is not successful, the student teacher will be removed.
  • Removal will carry with it certain conditions relative to rescheduling student teaching. These conditions will be determined on a case-by-case basis depending upon the needs of the student teacher. A committee composed of the supervising teacher, supervising principal, university coordinator and director of student teaching will determine these conditions.
