Amber Cancienne
Amber Cancienne can’t pinpoint exactly what made her want to be a nurse. Maybe it was the colorful, comfortable scrubs or perhaps the opportunity to save lives.
More likely than not, her career choice was solidified throughout her life as she watched her mom get ready for work every morning and tell of her day’s work at night. “My mom’s a nurse so I’ve always been exposed to the facets of what it takes to be a nurse,” Amber says. “I’m sure that played a big factor.” Amber balances her time among her studies, sorority and family. She hopes to work in a hospital Intensive Care Unit upon graduation. After getting some experience as a nurse, she plans to attend graduate school to become a nurse anesthetist. |
Working toward: a bachelor’s degree in nursing
Expected graduation date: Fall 2009
High school: Vandebilt Catholic High School
Hometown: Houma, La.
Nicholls involvement:
I’m a member of Nicholls Association of Student Nurses, a member of Phi Mu Sorority and a Nicholls Ambassador.
I chose to attend Nicholls because …
… I had heard about its good nursing program, and it was close to home. Since I’ve been here, my favorite thing about being in the nursing program has been the instructors. They are all very helpful and spend a lot of time with students, trying to help us improve.
When I can find spare time, I enjoy …
… playing tennis and hanging out with my friends and family. Most of the time, though, I’m busy studying.
What I will remember most about Nicholls …
… is attending football games, getting involved in Phi Mu and participating in Greek Week. I never thought being in a sorority would be this great. I had no intention of joining a sorority but signed up for rush at the last minute. Sororities at Nicholls defy stereotypes and are a lot better than what many students think. It’s a great opportunity to meet so many different types of people that you can get along with.
