Blair Bass

“Old school” graphic design is what inspires Blair Bass — a fiery artist, soccer assistant and Democrat.

While Web site design attracts many of her classmates, Blair considers the Web too mainstream and prefers printmaking.

“What I like is that there’s no limit to graphics. You can use everything around you, all media,” she says. “But I don’t like when graphic design becomes all business and loses its real meaning.”

Blair weaves political statements into her artwork, enjoying how graphic design provides a platform to voice her opinion and sway the thoughts of others.

When she isn’t in the art studios of Talbot Hall, Blair’s at the Nicholls soccer field. After injuries kept her from returning to the game after three seasons as a fullback, she remains involved as a student assistant.

Working toward: a bachelor’s degree in art with a graphic design emphasis

Expected graduation date: Fall 2009

High school: Judson High School in Converse, Texas

Hometown: San Antonio, Texas

Nicholls involvement:
I am a member of AIGA and Delta Zeta Sorority. I am also looking forward to becoming a member of Kappa Pi, an art honor society. While it is upsetting to be at soccer games and not be able to play because of injuries, I am excited about still being a part of the Nicholls soccer team. Now I get to understand where my coaches were coming from.

Current employment:
I bartend at Bubba’s II Restaurant & Sports Lounge in Thibodaux.

I chose to attend Nicholls because …
… Nicholls offered me the opportunity to play soccer and attend on scholarship. I had heard of the university before being recruited because my sister and cousin attended Texas State University, which is in the same conference as Nicholls. The transition from high school to college was not a big difference for me because my high school had a larger student population than Nicholls. I found that everyone at Nicholls was so welcoming and wanted you to be a part of the campus, especially during orientation.

When I can find spare time, I enjoy …
… spending time with my friends and sorority members and working on my art. Balancing a sport with schoolwork is challenging but people who say they are too busy are usually the ones who have the most time on their hands. Soccer Coach Cindy Piper instills in her players the value of being punctual. I write my whole life down in my planner and make sure I follow it. Sometimes I have to pick and choose but I don’t commit to anything I know I don’t have time to put a full effort toward, otherwise it’s just a waste.

After college, I plan to …
… work for a graphic design firm or become a freelancer. I definitely want to stay within the art field.

What I will always remember about Nicholls is …
… the camaraderie of my soccer teammates and coaches. Most student athletes come to Nicholls from out of state and must mature a lot faster than students who commute. You have to get up on your own, interact with people you don’t know and stay on track academically in order to remain on the team. While my mother was not close by, Coach Piper basically became my mother and someone who I could talk to.
