Cody Martin
Cody Martin may spend most of time sitting quietly behind a computer designing graphics to appear in The Nicholls Worth campus newspaper, but he knows solid social skills are just as crucial to his success as design talent. That’s why he decided to concentrate in public relations.
Since the journalism field is constantly changing, versatility should prove helpful for Cody. While working for his high school newspaper and yearbook staffs, Cody improved his writing skills and also snuck in some graphic design work, even though that wasn’t his responsibility. Once at Nicholls, Cody was hired as a graphic designer for The Nicholls Worth. “I began to realize that I was more interested in that aspect of mass communication,” Cody says. “Graphic design went from a hobby to something I’m good at now. At first, I wasn’t sure I wanted to mix my hobbies with my career, but it’s becoming a good thing.” Cody recently won a Student Publications award for a timeline he designed to highlight special moments for women during Women’s History Month. He also dabbles in designing Web sites, business cards and fliers for family and friends. |
Working toward: a bachelor’s degree in mass communication with a public relations concentration and a minor in graphic design and marketing
Expected graduation date: Fall 2011
High school: Scotlandville Magnet High School
Hometown: Baton Rouge, La.
Nicholls involvement:
I’m a Nicholls ambassador, active member of Student Programming Association and a graphic designer for The Nicholls Worth.
I chose to attend Nicholls because …
… I was looking for a school with a good mass communication program. I have relatives who live near Nicholls, and after exploring the campus and its programs, I decided to come here.
When I can find spare time, I enjoy …
… spending time with friends and working on small graphic design projects. I also have a passion for writing, whether it be freehand, poetry or essays.
After college, I plan to …
… start my own graphic design and advertising company. I hope my mass communication background will help me not only do print advertisements but also television commercials. I would also like to pursue a master’s degree in graphic design.
What I will remember most about Nicholls is …
… my first Crawfish Day. I had heard a lot of talk about the event, and it turned out to be a great day. Through my involvement with SPA, I even got to help out with the preliminary planning for the day.
