James Burrell

James Burrell ate “everything and anything” his freshman year at Nicholls. The numerous fast food outlets were too tempting, and the cost of eating healthy was too expensive.

After taking a dietetics class, James realized how much he really knew about nutrition and health - and how little he was applying it in his life. He changed his major and eating habits.

“Stay away from grease,” James advises other students. “It is difficult to eat healthy as a college student but it’s becoming easier.” For example, the renovated Galliano Dining Hall now features freshly deli sandwiches, grilled foods and fresh fruit and salad.

“It’s rare to find another guy in a dietetics class,” James says, “but as the world becomes more health conscious I expect that to change.”

Working toward: a bachelor’s degree in dietetics

Expected graduation date: Spring 2010

High school: St. Stanislaus College in Bay St. Louis, Miss.

Hometown: Franklin, La.

Nicholls involvement:
I am a member of the Residence Hall Association and Student Programming Association.

Current employment:
I am a student worker at the information booth in the Bollinger Memorial Student Union. Current students as well as visitors ask me general questions about Nicholls, how to find the room or building they’re looking for, or sometimes things that seem obvious, like “Where is the bathroom?” (The bathroom is across the hall from the booth.) It’s a great place to work because you have a lot of downtime, which I use to study.

I chose to attend Nicholls because …
… I attended a Future Business Leaders of American conference at Nicholls during my freshman year of high school. I remember it being a very vibrant and lively campus — a place where I could see myself fitting in.

When I can find spare time, I enjoy …
… hanging out with friends around campus and at Starbucks coffee shop.

After college, I plan to …
… work in a hospital, move to Boston and travel the country.

What I will remember most about Nicholls is …
… the openness and diversity of people on campus. You don’t have to be a different person to be accepted in college. I also like that I can walk around the Nicholls campus and recognize a lot of faces. Many walk up to me and say, “Hey, aren’t you that guy who works at the info desk in the union?”
