Mia Coulon
For most college students, community service is a chore. For Mia Coulon, it’s an honor.
When she’s not in the chemistry lab or attending a Student Government Association meeting, Mia enjoys volunteering at homeless shelters, half-way houses and other charitable organizations. In April 2007, she participated in X-Treme Spring Break, which helped Habitat for Humanity build homes for area families. In 2007, Nicholls hosted the program, which brought together college students from across the state for a common good. “It was really a great experience because I’m from New Orleans, so it meant more to me than just giving up my Spring Break,” Mia says. “I didn’t realize that so many of the people getting homes would be from the New Orleans area and had been displaced by Hurricane Katrina. I thought it would be more people from the immediate area.” Mia says it was rewarding to work with an organization as respected as Habitat for Humanity. She’s proud to be counted among the thousands of people who volunteered with Habitat, including dozens of celebrities. |

Nicholls involvement:
I am a member of the Student Government Association, NAACP, Nicholls Chemical Sciences Society, Student Educators and Leaders and Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies. I’m also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. I’ve been involved in the SGA since my freshman year and previously served as its publicity director. The experience allowed me to get to know people in organizations across campus and to become aware of what organizations contributed to the campus. That made it easier for me to decide which other organizations I wanted to become involved in.
I chose to attend Nicholls because …
… of its location and demographics. Nicholls is close to home and liked that it was a small campus environment. I also had heard that its science graduates have nearly 100 percent acceptance rates into medical and graduate schools.
When I can find spare time, I enjoy …
… community service, shopping and hanging out with family and friends.
After college, I plan to …
… pursue a graduate degree in pharmacology. Eventually, I hope to manufacture or research drugs for the Food and Drug Administration or a major company that produces drugs, such as Pfizer. Last summer, I had an internship at LSU Medical School’s pharmacology department. I hope that will help me get admitted to their graduate school.
The Nicholls experience I will remember the most is …
… when I was honored for my grades as a freshman at the College of Arts and Sciences banquet.
