Tye Leonard

flowers1.jpgTye Leonard probably grew up watching “Bill Nye, the Science Guy.” Or maybe she was inspired by a high school science fair project.

Either way, Tye is a determined chemistry major, aspiring to become a pharmacist and perhaps open her own pharmacy or work for a pharmaceutical company.

“I enjoy learning about chemical reactions and structures,” Tye says. “Chemistry is the backbone of pharmacy. It’s so important to learn how chemicals react to each other and with the body and why some chemicals/medicines can’t be mixed.”

Upon graduation, Tye plans to apply to pharmacy school. Should she not get accepted her first year, she’ll have a chemistry degree to fall back on. Having options was one of the main reasons Tye chose chemistry as her major.

Tye is up for whatever challenges come in the way of becoming a pharmacist. As the mother of a 3-year-old, Tyson, she has become a pro at balancing her time.

“There is always time between classes to study or even after night class. You must sit and take time to find the time,” Tye says. “I talk to friends at other colleges, and they say their teachers don’t care whether they go to class or not. It’s not like that here. Even though you should know what you have to do, there is always someone guiding you along the way.”

Working toward: a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with a minor in mathematics

Expected graduation date: Fall 2009

High school: Berwick High School

Hometown: Patterson, La.

Nicholls involvement:
I’m president of the Nicholls Chemistry Student Society and a member of Student Educators and Leaders. I have a lot of ideas for NCSS and hope we can be more active on campus. I am also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Current employment:
I work in the Office of Admissions as a telecounselor. I also work off-campus as a teller at Whitney Bank in Morgan City.

I chose to attend Nicholls because …
… it’s close to home and has a family atmosphere. I didn’t want to be at a big college where students are just a number and can’t get attention from instructors when they need it.

When I can find spare time, I enjoy …
… being outdoors, attending or watching sporting events and spending time with my son and sister.

What I will remember most about Nicholls is …
… getting to know people. When I walk around campus, I always hear someone saying, “Hey. How are you doing?” You know there is always someone you can call on if you need help. I will also remember the football games, which I always try to attend.
