Dr. Deborah Bordelon, Dean
Dean of the College of Education and Professor of Special Education
Education never stops for Dr. Deborah Bordelon. It is woven into virtually every minute of every day of her life. From 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., she’s working with undergraduate and graduate students as a teacher, adviser and mentor. She’s interacting with faculty and staff to ensure that the college’s programs in teacher education, educational leadership, psychology, counseling and family and consumer science are top notch. She’s representing and promoting the College of Education on university committees.
Yet Bordelon doesn’t take a brain break on nights and weekends. She’s reading professional journals to keep up on trends in special education. She’s visiting museums and art galleries, studying the unique approaches artists use to create meaning in their work. She’s exploring other parts of the country and world through vacations and enjoying a good mystery or science fiction novel when she can find the time.
“Every day presents new learning opportunities,” Bordelon says. “It is exciting to be a member of a learning community where we have opportunities to share ideas and information with each other and grow as learners.”
Bordelon, who became dean of the College of Education in July 2006, is not new to Nicholls. She worked at Nicholls as an assistant professor of education from 1995 to 1998 before moving to Xavier University in New Orleans, where she served as chair of the Division of Education and associate professor of education.
Bordelon says the greatest strength of the Nicholls College of Education is the expertise and experience of the faculty members in all of the departments within the college.
“The faculty members actively engage their students in the learning process and strive to promote critical thinking in course assignments and field experiences,” Bordelon says. “Their strong sense of commitment to the community is evident in everything that they do.”
