Knowledge of the Learner and the Learning Environment (12 credit hours)
Entrance into these courses requires a 2.2 GPA. Successful completion of EDUC 421, 478 and 480 is a prerequisite for enrolling in courses in the Methodology and Teaching block.

Current Practices and Strategies in Teaching
This core first course, taken with regular education cohorts, will provide special education candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to establish successful partnerships with regular education teachers. 3 semester hours
EDUC 478
Instructional Strategies for Students with Mild/Moderate Exceptionalities
This course addresses special instructional needs of mild/moderate students and relates these needs to the selection of appropriate materials/methods/techniques necessary for development of academic and vocational/transitional skills. Contact hours in the field are required. Proficiency at the developing level is required. 3 semester hours

EDUC 480
Management of Students with Mild/Moderate Exceptionalities
This course will address behavioral management needs of mild/moderate students. It aligns relevant characteristics of mild/moderate students and effective practices in behavior management and social skill training. Contact hours in the field are required. Proficiency at the developing level is required. 3 semester hours

EDUC 399
Introduction to Multisensory Structured Language Programs
This course will assist candidates in identifying students who learn differently and in developing skills in using multisensory structured language techniques. Special emphasis will be given to the development of initial reading skills. Implementation in applied setting is required. 3 semester hours

Methodology and Teaching (9 credit hours)
Prior to enrolling in any courses in this block, students must:

  • make a C or better in courses in the knowledge block,
  • submit passing scores on the Praxis I,
  • have a 2.5 undergraduate/graduate GPA.

To be fully admitted to the program, you must also pass a Praxis content specialty test.

Advanced Instructional Planning for Students with Learning Disabilities
This course will address research-validated methods/modifications for acquisition of basic facts and content knowledge and for meeting transitional/vocational needs. Implementation of practices and documentation of competency in applied setting is required. Proficiency at the competency level is required. 3 semester hours

Offered in spring only.

EDCI 537
Methods of Teaching Students with Behavior Problems
This course will assist candidates working with students in grades 1-12 who have behavior and learning problems. The course will emphasize behavioral approaches but social skills training, surface counseling techniques and other non-behavior techniques will be addressed. 3 semester hoursOffered in fall only.
EDCI 556
Practicum in Educational Assessment
Prerequisite: Completion of all other coursework and submission of an initial portfolio. This course provides candidates with a supervised opportunity to use assessment information from a variety of sources in formulating educational plans and continuously monitoring the educational progress of individual students. 3 semester hours

Internship (6 semester hours)
Prior to enrolling in the internship, students must pass all remaining parts of the Praxis, have a job placement in a class for mild/moderate special education and submit an approved portfolio.

Candidates will enroll in an internship for two consecutive semesters 6 semester hours
