Scholarships

The following scholarships are available for education majors. Application forms can be picked up in the Financial Aid Office in Otto Candies Hall.

LORAINE M. COOK HONORARY SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded to an education senior who has at least a 3.0 GPA and is student teaching. A new recipient is named each regular semester by the University Scholarship Committee.

RITA GRENIER SCHOLARSHIP

Donated by Lafourche ARC (a mental retardation agency) in honor of Rita Lagarde Grenier, this scholarship is awarded to a full time special education sophomore, junior or senior. A minimum 2.75 GPA is required to continue the scholarship of $500 a semester.

KEITH T. AND RITA HAMILTON ENDOWED MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN EDUCATION

This scholarship is awarded to a student with at least sophomore status who has a minimum 3.25 GPA. The recipient will perform three hours of service a week at Lafourche or Terrebonne Parish elementary public schools. Service will consist of tutoring at-risk students, assisting teachers in the classroom environment or performing other services as deemed appropriate by the Lafourche or Terrebonne Parish School Board staff and the Nicholls College of Education Supervisor of Student Teaching.

CECIL HENDERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This one-year award of $500 per semester, goes to a graduating high school senior from Hahnville High School who will major in education. The recipient will be selected by a committee composed of the principal, three teachers and the St. Charles Parish assistant superintendent of education. The recipient must have at least a 3.0 GPA and a composite ACT score of at least 17. If the student does not maintain a 2.5 GPA the first semester, or changes major, the university will select an education senior from St. Charles Parish.

HERMANAS CLUB SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship goes to a full time student of at least sophomore status who has maintained a satisfactory academic average and who holds no college-issued scholarship other than one covering registration fees. Applicants must be majoring or minoring in special education. Need, personality, purpose and leadership are also considered by the Hermanas Club. The recipient must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA.

DEBRA ANN BATEMAN HUTCHINSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the Nicholls College of Education Elementary Education degree program. The recipient must be at least of sophomore status, be a resident of Terrebonne Parish, demonstrate financial need and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. The recipient must also perform three hours of service a week at a Terrebonne Parish elementary public school.

GEORGE “GEE” MITCHELL PHYSICAL EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded to a full time student of at least junior or senior standing, with preference going to a senior. The recipient must have at least a 2.5 GPA and must be majoring in physical education. Applicants must be Louisiana residents. A $100 one-year award is presented in the fall.

PEGGY PALMER PERDUE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded to a full time education major of at least sophomore status who is a resident of Morgan City. Second preference goes to applicants from St. Mary Parish.

FLORINE A. PETIT EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded to a full time education student of at least junior standing who is in need of financial assistance. Applicants must be from the Tenth Ward of Lafourche Parish and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA each semester. The scholarship is for $200 a semester through the senior year as long as the criteria are met.

TERREBONNE FINE ARTS GUILD, INC. SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded to a Terrebonne Parish high school graduating senior planning to major in fine arts, art education or an art-related field. Applicants must maintain a 2.5 overall GPA with a 2.5 average in all arts courses and be enrolled full-time.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP FOR EXCELLENCE

This $300 scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time junior or senior student majoring in general family and consumer sciences with a concentration in child, family and social service; vocational family and consumer sciences education or birth to five/early interventionist education. Applicants must be members of NAFCS and have completed 60 or more semester hours with a 3.0 or above GPA. Financial need, service activities and professional participation are considered.

MARGARET V. JOLLEY FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student majoring in general family and consumer sciences. Applicants must be at least sophomore standing with a 3.0 GPA. Financial need, personality, character, purpose and leadership qualities are considered in addition to academic standing. The scholarship is valued at $300 annually; however, the value may increase as determined by the Family and Consumer Sciences Alumni Association.

LAFOURCHE ASSOCIATION OF FAMILY AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship, sponsored by the Lafourche Association of Family and Community Education, is awarded to a full-time student who has completed a minimum of 72 semester hours. Applicants must have a 3.0 or better GPA. Preference is given to Lafourche Parish residents but others are considered. The scholarship recipient receives $250 per semester for one year.

THE TERREBONNE ASSOCIATION FOR FAMILY AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION’S JEAN PICOU/HOMEMAKER COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must be Louisiana residents and graduates of a Louisiana high school. The scholarship also requires the recipient to be a full-time student majoring in family and consumer sciences with an overall GPA of at least 2.5. Three letters of recommendation must be submitted with the application.

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES STUDENT AWARD

This award recognizes family and consumer sciences majors who have made outstanding contributions to the FACS Department and to the university. The recipient must be a full-time student with a 2.5 or above GPA. Faculty members nominate potential recipients. Nominees must complete a self-reporting form, which is evaluated and scored by the faculty.

KAPPA OMICRON NU SCHOLAR AWARD

Three scholarships are awarded by Kappa Omicron Nu. One scholarship is awarded to the senior with the highest GPA. Two scholarships are awarded to the Kappa Omicron Nu members with the highest GPAs. The recipients must be majoring in a degree program in family and consumer sciences.

JUDY THERIOT LEADERSHIP AWARD

This $100 award is presented annually to a family and consumer sciences senior (90 or more credit hours earned) who is a full-time student and has earned at least a 2.7 overall GPA, with at least a 3.0 GPA in FACS courses.
