Tutoring Center

Philosophy

The expected outcome for students who receive tutoring is that they become confident, independent learners.  Peer tutors work with students to self- identify strengths and weaknesses, set goals for each session (and beyond), and ultimately find answers without the assistance of the tutor.   To achieve this, both tutors and students are expected to report to each session with a positive attitude and a willingness to contribute.  Ultimately, we hope that students leave their sessions ready to tackle assignments with a level of self-reliance that they previously did not have.

What We do

  • Provide tutoring in math, chemistry, physics, biology, accounting, QBA, economics, and foreign languages
  • Provide 60 minute small group sessions, in addition to drop-in tutoring
  • Provide a safe, non-judgmental place for students to get help and do work
  • Set goals with each student of what they want to accomplish for the session
  • Provide organization and study skills methods
  • Assist with homework assignments
  • Provide worksheets for many of the subjects tutored
  • Offer study sessions for some math and chemistry courses

What We Do Not Do

  • Substitute tutoring for classroom instruction
  • Assist with online quizzes or tests

Writing Center

Philosophy

Students are successful when they learn to research, write, and revise their own writing assignments. The Center does not seek to be a permanent solution to issues with writing. Our writing coaches are trained by a university English instructor to show best methods and practices for the messy, recursive process that is writing. Our job is to assist students with the process and help them become more confident in their writing skills. We are not to be used as a substitution for class instruction. Our belief is that when students focus on the process rather than the end product, they ultimately become not only more successful writers, but more successful thinkers—and that’s really all writing is about, thinking through ideas and committing them to paper!
