Policies and Procedures

TO: Dr. Stephen Hulbert, President
FROM: Dr. Michele Caruso, Chair
Unclassified Staff Advisory Council
RE: Policies and Procedures
Attached to this memo are our recommended revisions for the Termination of Employment Policy and Procedures for Response to the Death of a Faculty Member, Staff Member, or Retiree. A clean copy, as well as a copy showing our changes, is included.
In reviewing both documents we attempted to maintain fairness to the employee, meet the University’s needs, and make sure all wording and organization would be clear to any reader.
Please note that during our discussions regarding the Termination Policy there were several content issues that were of concern, but that would need to be addressed outside of this particular policy. We do intend to pursue these policy changes in the near future. These include a) the Unclassified employee Grievance Policy and Procedures and b) the “at will” status of Unclassified employees.
Furthermore, we recommend that Termination Policy for Unclassified Staff be divided into two sections: 1) Involuntary Termination and 2) Voluntary Termination (the current resignation policy). As part of the Involuntary Termination section of this policy, we will draft and present a recommendation regarding termination of employment due to termination of a grant or elimination of a program.
We appreciate the opportunity to represent the Unclassified Staff and to work with you to secure policies and procedures that are effective and appropriate for all parties affected by them.
We look forward to a response indicating acceptance or further review of these policies and procedures.
