Department of Allied Health Sciences
The Department of Allied Health Sciences has established an excellent reputation for:
- Sponsoring associate, baccalaureate and advanced certificate allied health programs at both the main campus in Thibodaux and the Houma facility site.
- Outstanding educational programs in clinical allied health disciplines such as Advanced Respiratory Therapy, Cardiopulmonary Care Science, Communicative Disorders, Cytotechnology, Emergency Medical Services-Paramedic and Health Sciences with specialty concentrations in professional practice, supervision and management, health and wellness, sports science and athletic training.
- Allied health education programs nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care, the Committee on Accreditation for Educational Programs in the Emergency Medical Services Professions, the Cytotechnology Programs Review Committee of the American Society of Cytopathology, the Commision on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, and the Comission of Accreditation for Dietetics Education.
- High tech, state-of-the art clinics and laboratories used in the clinical education of students in the evaluation of cardiac, pulmonary, speech, language, hearing, and sports medicine related illnesses.
- Jo Carol Nolen Speech, Hearing, and Language Center which is used as a major clinical teaching laboratory for faculty and students in the Communicative Disorders program.
- Active student organizations in Respiratory Therapy, EMS-Paramedic, Communicative Disorders and Athletic Training.
- Credentialing pass rates on national and state licensure/certification examinations.

- Faculty members hold certifications in various specialty areas such as Neonatal-Pediatric Respiratory Care Specialist, Clinical Exercise Physiologist, Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Respiratory Therapist, Paramedic, Athletic Trainer, Speech Therapist, Audiologist, Cytotechnologist, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and dietitians.
- Faculty members are involved at the state and national levels in professional activities such as licensure/certification examination item writing, accreditation site reviews, peer review of scholarly works and professional society appointments and commissions.
- Development of entry to advanced level articulation program in respiratory therapy.
- Development of 2+2 articulation program (B.S. degree program in Health Sciences) for Associate degreed and credentialed allied health professionals.
