If you’ve experienced relationship/domestic violence, you should:
- Decide whom you will inform of the situation. Ask a neighbor, roommate, co-worker or student life staff member to call the police if the abuser shows up or if they hear violence. Show them a picture of the abuser.
- Contact Women’s Resource and Services Office for assistance.
- Devise a safety plan for traveling to and from work, school and home. Try to travel with someone else, change your routes, alert others of when to expect you and the route you are taking, and think about what you would do if something happens.
- Decide where you will go and whom to call if you are in danger or must escape from an attack. Practice getting out of places quickly.
- If you have children, practice safety measures with them. Tell their daycare or school who is authorized to pick them up.
- If you are leaving the relationship, be especially careful because this is the MOST DANGEROUS time for victims of battering.
- Collect your important papers, legal documents, family photos, etc. and place them in a safe location.
- If you are thinking about going back to an abuser, consider talking it over with a trained professional and discuss how to best take care of yourself in this situation.
- Remember that the abuse is not your fault.
