Our advisors meet regularly with students, assisting them in goal setting, career exploration, selection of a major, educational planning and course selection.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>SCHEDULING AN ADVISING APPOINTMENT<\/h2>\n<h2>Students can schedule an appointment with their advisor by calling 985-448-4117.<\/h2>\n<p>Walk-in appointments are available during all business hours, year-round. \u00a0Students are welcome to stop by for a quick visit at any time. He or she can help you identify issues that may be holding you back or suggest campus resources to help you get back on track.<\/li>\n<li><strong>When you are thinking about changing your major<\/strong> \u2013 Changing your major is a big decision, and you should consult your advisor to make sure you\u2019ve considered all of the issues involved, including how a change might push back your graduation date, affect your financial aid and change your career prospects. Your advisor can help you get an inside view on the major you are considering by putting you in contact with professors and students in that department.<\/li>\n<li><strong>When you want to drop or add a course<\/strong> \u2013 It\u2019s important to consult with your advisor before making changes to the schedule you set during your registration advisement. Your advisor will make sure you are not overlooking any details that may negatively affect your long-range plans and ensure that you are taking the proper number of hours to maintain your financial aid and stay on track for graduation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>When you are exploring career possibilities\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Your advisor can explain the traditional courses of study that lead to various professions and suggest other, less typical routes you may wish to explore as well. Each person\u2019s career path is different, and your advisor has helped many students find the best possible route. He or she can share examples of opportunities other students have pursued and suggest resources on and off campus to help you make informed decisions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>When you have questions about Nicholls policies and procedures<\/strong> \u2013 A university the size of Nicholls naturally has many policies and procedures. Your advisor can help you find answers to any questions you may have about university policies and procedures\u00a0 from registration and billing to judicial matters and housing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you have other questions, comments or concerns<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The important thing to remember is that your advisor is on your side. He or she wants to see you succeed in your academic and life endeavors. If anything at all is threatening that success whether it\u2019s a personal issue, academic problem or anything else don\u2019t hesitate to seek help from your advisor. If your advisor cannot help you, he or she will find someone who can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a>Preparing for an Advising Appointment<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are some tips to remember as you prepare for a productive meeting with your advisor:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Be proactive.<\/strong> Think about the big picture, your current interests, your future career and which courses will get you from point A to point B.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be prepared.<\/strong> Write out specific questions or concerns. For example, if you\u2019re meeting about course selection, start by researching potential courses in the schedule of classes and making out a tentative schedule with backups.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be honest.<\/strong> Be willing to identify and discuss your difficulties. Then follow up on the plan you and your advisor agree upon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be open.\u00a0<\/strong>You should be prepared to accept new ideas, even if they seem difficult.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be assertive.\u00a0<\/strong>If you feel overwhelmed or you are having any trouble, ask for advice. Your advisor will help you get the support services you need, but he or she won\u2019t know to help if you don\u2019t ask.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be respectful.<\/strong>\u00a0Pay close attention to your advisor during the meeting. If you must cancel an advising appointment, please call ahead to\n<p>reschedule. If you are not in a UNIV 101 course you can use the \u201cFreshman Advisor Directory\u201d at the link below to see who your assigned advisor is as well as their contact information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/academic-services-center\/academic-advising-center\/\">https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/academic-services-center\/academic-advising-center\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a>How can I make changes to my current schedule?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can make changes to your schedule using Banner. You should consult with your advisor before making changes to your schedule or if you need any assistance with the changes.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a>How do I send my transcripts to Nicholls if I am a transfer student?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nicholls must have official copies of transcripts from each college or university previously attended. This should be done as quickly as possible. Participating schools may submit transcripts electronically through eSCRIP-SAFE\u00ae. Mailed transcripts should be sent to:<\/p>\n<p>Nicholls State University<\/p>\n<p>Office of Admissions<\/p>\n<p>P.O. Box 2004<\/p>\n<p>Thibodaux, LA 70310<\/p>\n<p>Some colleges and universities will fax official copies of transcripts directly to our admissions office. The admissions office fax number is 985-448-4929.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a>I already have earned credits through high school Dual Enrollment. How do I get credit for them at Nicholls?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you participated in dual enrollment in high school, you will need to send those transcripts to Nicholls in order to earn credit for those courses. You will need to contact the institution you took those courses through and request a transcript be sent to Nicholls. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a>I have earned credit from CLEP or AP. How do I get those credits on my transcript?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Credit is awarded when the CLEP examination score is reported on an <a href=\"https:\/\/clep.collegeboard.org\/about-clep\/scoring\">official transcript from CLEP<\/a> and sent directly by the CLEP transcript service to the Office of Records and Registration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Advanced Placement (AP) credit should have their scores sent by the College Board directly to the Nicholls State University Office of Records and Registration. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Passing scores for subjects credited through CLEP and\/or AP are recorded by an \u201cS,\u201d by the equivalent Nicholls course number and title, and by the appropriate credit hours.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a>What is the Accuplacer and how do I know if I qualify to take the Accuplacer exam?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ACCUPLACER test is used for placement purposes only.\u00a0 Course credit cannot be awarded based on ACCUPLACER scores.\u00a0 Prospective first-time freshmen who are ineligible for admission because of the need for more than one developmental course may take the ACCUPLACER test an unlimited number of times.\u00a0 First-time freshmen who have been admitted to the University and placed into English 100, Math 100, Math 115, or Math 116 may challenge placement by taking ACCUPLACER prior to the official first day of classes of the semester in which the student intends to enroll in any of the courses.\u00a0 ACCUPLACER may be taken for this purpose no more than three times for each subject.\u00a0 Once classes have begun, and a student is enrolled an English or mathematics course, either as an audit or for credit, then that student is no longer eligible for further ACCUPLACER testing.\u00a0 In that case, the student\u2019s placement shall be considered final.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>ACCUPLACER testing is available only by appointment.\u00a0 To schedule a test please call 985.493.2596.\u00a0 Students should report to 212 Elkins Hall (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/academic-services-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2019\/09\/nicholls_map_3D_color.pdf\">campus map<\/a>).\u00a0 Students are not allowed to use a personal calculator.\u00a0 An onscreen calculator is provided for select items.\u00a0 Test results are available immediately after testing is complete.\u00a0 One score is issued for the Writing test and two for the Mathematics test.\u00a0 Course placement is determined by these scores.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a>How many hours should I take in a semester?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>We recommend that students take between 15-16 hours a semester. If you take 15 hours a semester for 8 semesters you would be on track to graduate in four years. <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a>What is considered full time?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>An undergraduate student who is taking at least 12 semester hours during a semester or in the summer session is considered a full time student.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a>What should I do if I am struggling with my classes?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you are struggling with your classes please reach out to your advisor for assistance. We can recommend campus resources such as Tutoring, Counseling, Academic Coaching, etc. to help you be more successful.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a>What is UNIV 101 and do I need to take it?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This class is a first-year experience course designed to provide students with the tools necessary to make a successful transition to college life. Please consult your advisor for a schedule review.
