Gaither Pope is from Jackson, Mississippi where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Tougaloo College in 1992. In 1995, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Drawing from Louisiana State University. He returned to L.S.U. as an adjunct to the art faculty in 1997 where he taught courses in drawing, painting, and design until 2006. In spring 2006, Pope joined the faculty at Nicholls State. He is currently an associate professor teaching drawing and painting.
As a painter, Pope is the veteran of numerous solo and group exhibitions. His work has been reviewed numerous times in New Orleans Art Review, and it has been presented in several publications including The Cincinnati Review, New American Paintings, A Unique Slant of Light: Louisiana Landscape, and in Louisiana Life Magazine. A piece of his work was used as the cover image for an edition of The Norton Anthology of Literature. He has had work featured in a number of public venues including the Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans; the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum, Baton Rouge; and the Shaw Center for the Arts. Pope is represented by The Cole Pratt Gallery, New Orleans. He resides with his family in Baton Rouge.
