Dr. Doucet was born and raised in the coastal fishing village of Golden Meadow, Louisiana. Following graduation from South Lafourche High School, he attended Nicholls State University to major in chemistry. At Nicholls, he served as President of the Nicholls Chemical Sciences Society as well as SGA Senator from both the College of Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences. He earned the doctorate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from LSU Medical Center in New Orleans, where he was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for outstanding service and dissertation research. Under two NIH-funded postdoctoral fellowships, we worked on the team of New Orleans geneticists who contributed to discovery of the gene causing Acadian Usher Syndrome (Type Ic Usher syndrome).
At Nicholls, Dr. Doucet created and developed novel courses and curricula, including Genome Biology, Technical Writing for the Sciences, Biomedical Thesis, Molecular Endocrinology, the concentration in Cell and Molecular Biology, and several other courses in both undergraduate and graduate biology as well as multiple courses the University Honors Program. He served as Director of the University Honors Program for 17 years and has mentored over 50 Honors students in thesis research. He is a past Head of the Department of Biological Sciences, and today he serves as founding Dean of the College of Sciences and Technology as well as Director of Coastal Initiatives.
He is a graduate of the first class of the University of Louisiana System’s Management and Leadership Institute. In the community, he is a graduate of the first class of Leadership Lafourche and has subsequently served for three terms as Chairman of the Board of Leadership Lafourche, Inc. He is past President of the Louisiana Academy of Sciences, the Louisiana Collegiate Honors Council, and the Rotary Club of Thibodaux. He is current President of the Environment and Health Council of Louisiana and currently serves as editor of the Proceedings of the Louisiana Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Doucet conducts research in genetic anthropology of Louisiana populations, medical forensics, and the history and culture of Louisiana coastal villages. He is author or editor of several books, and is an award-winning poet and playwriter. He contributes a monthly column on science and culture in Point of Vue magazine (Houma, Louisiana).
