Gar Laboratory
The #GarLab uses conservation biology and fundamental ecological principles to investigate patterns in life history, biodiversity, and evolution of species at multiple scales, and how these patterns can inform restoration and management of aquatic natural resources. We are particularly interested in the ecological roles of peripheral and migratory populations of species; these populations may be more susceptible to perturbations such as habitat loss, invasive species, and climate change. Fishes serve as our primary model organisms, including, but not limited to, the gars (Lepisosteidae). Additional collaborations include genomics and fishery management of “ancient sport fish” and sustainable aquaculture. We also use science communication and social media to raise awareness of the value of aquatic ecosystems and freshwater biodiversity.
