{"id":542,"date":"2017-09-14T08:47:39","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T13:47:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/chemistry\/?p=542"},"modified":"2017-09-14T08:47:39","modified_gmt":"2017-09-14T13:47:39","slug":"chemistry-students-present-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/chemistry\/2017\/09\/14\/chemistry-students-present-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Chemistry students present research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four chemistry students recently presented their research results at the 11th Annual Research Week held on the Nicholls campus from February 29th &#8211; March 3rd.<\/p>\n<p><b>Courtney Beamer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Michael Kramer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Shane Swan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Cyrus PIcou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> each presented posters on a variety topics, ranging from environmental chemistry to molecular modeling. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Courtney Beamer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> showcased her work in developing liquid phase microextraction for the detection of polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds in Bayou Lafourche. \u00a0Many of these compounds are carcinogenic and pose a health hazard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Michael Kramer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> investigated the presence of inorganic pollutants in Bayou Lafourche using the newly acquired ion chromatogaph. \u00a0This instrument is capable of measuring ions and carbohydrates on the order of parts per million or lower.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Shane Swan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> presented his results of investigations of organic pollutants in Bayou Lafourche. \u00a0He used the newly acquired gas chromatograph &#8211; mass spectrometer (GC-MS) to identify compounds related to the weathering of oil from oil spills.<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Cyrus Picou<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> investigated the use of molecular modeling techniques to develop a simple model that allows the prediction of physical properties of hydrocarbons based on calculated molecular surface areas and volumes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/chemistry\/files\/2017\/09\/picou.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-567\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-567 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/chemistry\/files\/2017\/09\/picou-220x211.png\" alt=\"picou\" width=\"220\" height=\"211\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 220px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 220\/211;\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/chemistry\/files\/2017\/09\/courtney-et-al.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-568\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-568 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.nicholls.edu\/chemistry\/files\/2017\/09\/courtney-et-al-220x142.png\" alt=\"courtney et al\" width=\"220\" height=\"142\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 220px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 220\/142;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four chemistry students recently presented their research results at the 11th Annual Research Week held on the Nicholls campus from February 29th &#8211; March 3rd.
