What to expect from the first contact<\/strong><\/h4>

Students that have never been seen in our office before or students that have not been seen within the last year will have a first contact appointment, which we call a triage appointment, which is typically within the first week of a student contacting the office. When you arrive for the triage appointment, someone will direct you to a kiosk in our waiting room and you will be asked to complete paperwork (usually takes between 5 and 10 minutes). Once completed, you will then meet with professional staff who will review the nature of a triage appointment and limits to confidentiality. The staff will then ask a few brief questions to determine what services we offer will best fit your needs. At this point you could be referred for any of our services that could best meet your need, but can be adjusted and reevaluated as services continue.<\/p>

What to expect from the first counseling session<\/strong><\/h4>

When you arrive for your first counseling appointment, someone will escort you to a computer kiosk in our waiting room and you will be asked to complete some initial intake forms (this usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes to complete).\u00a0 You will also read over and sign a Declaration Statement for your specific counselor.\u00a0 Once you have completed these forms, your counselor will review the paperwork and will then come to greet you.<\/p>

Once in the counselor\u2019s office, the counselor will verbally review the Declaration Statement, specifically their professional qualifications and the exceptions to confidentiality.\u00a0 The first session is a bit different from other counseling sessions.\u00a0 In the first session, the counselor will go through a questionnaire, obtaining information about the reason you are seeking counseling, and also some background information which helps us to have a \u201cbig picture\u201d view of you, and the scope of the problem(s) that you are addressing. \u00a0By the end of this questionnaire, you will discuss your goals for counseling or what you want to get out of the counseling experience.<\/p>

What to expect from continued counseling sessions<\/strong><\/h4>

Here is a list of things to keep in mind during the course of counseling:<\/p>

a) People often have some anxiety about seeking counseling; however usually once they complete the first session and have met their counselor in person, they report feeling a sense of relief and are eager to continue the counseling process.<\/p>

b) You won\u2019t always immediately feel better.\u00a0 The length of counseling varies for each person and each problem.\u00a0 It can take as little as two or three sessions to feel relief or it may sometimes it takes several weeks or months to achieve your desired results.<\/p>

c) Counseling sessions are usually tailored to the needs of the client, and the type of problem that is being addressed.\u00a0 There is usually more than one way to approach any situation\/issue and counselors make attempts to match potential interventions to both the type of problem and the \u201cstyle\u201d of each client.<\/p>
