Updated from the President’s Office

Dear Colonel Family,

For the past two weeks, a group of our hard-working staff have been diligent in preparing our campus for our return. When we talk about reopening campus safely, it starts with the dedication of our people. They are custodians like Kia Johnson, Penny Melancon and Quentin Matthews, to name a few. They are maintenance crewmen such as Mike Robison, Cheyenne Chatagnier and Aaron Hidalgo.

It is because of their commitment that we can move forward with the first steps of reopening campus. When more of our staff return to campus on May 26, they’ll do so to clean offices and refreshed spaces. When more faculty, staff, and students return to campus, they will do so to clean classrooms and spaces that have been well maintained. I believe I speak for the rest of the campus when I say from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

For those who will soon return to campus, we will do more than clean our facilities. We will distribute protective equipment, including face coverings, gloves and hand sanitizer. We are going to encourage every member of campus to wear masks when around others and continue to use social distancing measures. And we are developing testing and tracing processes under CDC guidelines and our capabilities.

Tomorrow will mark the end of the Spring semester and our eyes will turn to the summer. We know that many of our faculty and staff are faced with finding childcare as they return to work. Little Colonels Academy will reopen on May 26 for the children of essential employees with restrictions on group size. The staff will clean the facilities, administer temperature checks and teach the children to wash their hands often. When Gov. Edwards announces Phase II, normal group sizes will resume and all children can return.

For those of you wondering if quarantine calories count, trust me, they do. And beginning June 1, the Callais Rec Center will reopen and help you get back into shape. They are still determining how they will operate and will notify campus of those rules once they are complete.

On Monday, our housekeeping staff will return. Much like the men and women I referenced above, these individuals will prepare our living spaces for the return of students in the Fall. Our goal is to provide the best undergraduate living experience in the state. And we will do that safely. We are working together to determine what that looks like but will communicate those guidelines soon.

The safety of our students, faculty and staff remains my biggest concern. We are returning to campus because we believe we have the means to do so safely. We will take care of each other because we are a family, and together we are #NichollsStrong.

So join me tomorrow in watching the Virtual Conferral Ceremony. Reach out to your students and reach out to your friends and congratulate them on their achievement. One day soon, we will be able to do this together.

With Colonel Pride,

Jay Clune, President
Nicholls State University
