DUAL ENROLLMENT

Welcome to Dual Enrollment at Nicholls State University.

The Nicholls State University Dual Enrollment program gives high school students a chance to earn college credit while still working towards their high school diploma.  Dual Enrollment can save students time and money, but make certain you are up to the task; Dual Enrollment courses can be very challenging.  You should understand that course completed through Dual Enrollment are college courses, which means the courses may be considerably more rigorous than high school courses.  Also, you should remember that Dual Enrollment courses and the grades your earn become part of your permanent college academic record regardless of which institution you choose to attend, so your work should be your best.  If you work hard and plan carefully, participation in Dual Enrollment can be a very rewarding experience.

  1. For College Algebra (MATH 101) eligibility, students must have a minimum ACT math score of 21 or SAT math score of 530, or an ACCUPLACER QRAS score of 263. (For students without ACT or SAT scores: ASPIRE math score of 435, Pre-ACT score of 22, EOC Algebra I score of 770, EOC Geometry score of 760, or LEAP 2025 Geometry Master or above and completion of Algebra II with a C or better.)
  2. Students who do not meet minimum placement requirements for either English (ACT English sub-score of 18) or mathematics (ACT math sub-score of 19) will be considered for enrollment on a case-by-case basis. Students admitted under these circumstances may enroll in courses at Nicholls on a limited basis depending on the area of deficiency and must be addressing the area of deficiency.  By the spring of his or her senior year, a student must meet the minimum English, mathematics, and composite score requirements to participate in Dual Enrollment.

Typical Courses Taken by Dual Enrollment Students

Students in the Dual Enrollment Program often register for courses such as SOCI 151, Introductory Sociology, ART 110, Art Appreciation, MUS 105, Music Appreciation, and other general education core curriculum type freshman-level courses.  It is strongly recommended that students select courses with their intended college major in mind.  Although general education core curriculum courses are usually a safe choice, the types of courses allowed to satisfy graduation requirements vary among institutions and even among the degree programs within an institution.  For example, at Nicholls BIOL 105 will apply to several majors; however, it will not apply to majors like Nursing or even Biology.  For some majors students may select any Behavioral or Social Science course to satisfy that general education core curriculum requirement, but other majors like Accounting may identify particular courses to meet that requirement (ECON 211 and 212).

If you are planning to attend Nicholls, the applicability of a course to a program can be verified by locating your intended major in the Nicholls State University Academic Catalog.   If you are planning to attend another state institution, you can check whether a course is transferable by viewing the Louisiana State Master Course Articulation Matrix.  It is always best to confirm the acceptance of a course with the institution you plan to attend.

Please note that admission to the Dual Enrollment program does not guarantee enrollment in any course.  Dual Enrollment students must meet specific course prerequisites and co-requisites.  A full list of Nicholls courses and course descriptions with prerequisite and co-requisite information can be found in Courses of Instruction section of the Nicholls State University Academic Catalog
