Mr. Channing Parfait
Title: Coordinator of Clinical Practice and Residency
Department: Teacher Education
Office Location: Polk 228
BA, Nicholls State University
MAT, Nicholls State University
Currently a PhD Candidate at Louisiana State University for Educational Leadership P-12
Professional position or role within the College of Education:
I serve as the Coordinator of Clinical Practice and Residency. As the Department of Teacher Education continues to transition from the traditional student teaching semester to the one-year residency model, I work with multiple departments on campus and at the state level to ensure the transition is as seamless as possible for our candidates and university faculty. I also serve as an adjunct instructor for undergraduate courses within the Department of Teacher Education.
Benefits of Teacher Residency:
By having our candidates participate as a resident teacher, they gain more experience with a trained mentor teacher who can guide them through various co-planning and co-teaching strategies. In addition, resident teachers are able to see what the process of establishing classroom management at the beginning of the school year looks like, and they get to see how learning practices evolve throughout an entire school year. By the end of residency, candidates have a better idea of what to expect when they begin working in classrooms of their own.
