MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Graduate:

It is my great pleasure to congratulate you, the Nicholls State University Graduating Class of 2023. Earning a university degree represents one of the significant milestones in life and marks your transition from being college students to Nicholls alumni.

I join your families and friends who celebrate this accomplishment and take great pride in how far you have come. You have faced and overcome many challenges during your college years. Now you can look forward to a vast array of opportunities spread out before you as you embark on the next chapter of your lives.

Throughout your time as Colonels, you have proved again and again that you possess the grit and determination to achieve success and reach your goals. I hope the challenges of the past few years will help us all develop a profound sense of compassion for others, a resilience in the face of adversity, and resolve to achieve fuller careers and lives of meaning and purpose. I am confident that you possess the determination, skills, values and compassion to achieve anything.

Again, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you. Knowing that you did not get to this moment on your own, I want to thank your parents, spouses and partners, children, extended family members, friends, faculty, staff members, and community partners who have played a significant role in your journey. Each of you have benefited from a support network that has provided guidance, love, laughter, and encouragement.

We are not focused on endings today but on new beginnings. Graduates, as you move forward with your chosen career or continue in your studies and build your lives, know that we are with you.

With Colonel Pride,
Jay Clune, PhD
President
Nicholls State University

ACADEMIC DRESS

The distinctive dress associated with academic processions and convocations dates from the Middle Ages when students of the oldest European and English universities wore woolen and fur garments for warmth in drafty stone buildings. Most of the scholars were clerics in holy orders, and they wore cloaks to which were attached hoods that could be pulled up to cover their tonsured heads. Robes were adopted from both ecclesiastical and civilian sources. These early scholars selected the hood as an article of apparel to distinguish the various university degrees by color, trimming, or binding.

The use of academic dress in the United States has been continuous since colonial days. However, a uniform system was adopted by most institutions of higher learning near the end of the 19th century when an intercollegiate commission met in New York. This code of dress has become standard for most American colleges and universities.

In the United States, black is the traditional color for academic gowns, although some institutions authorize holders of their doctorates to wear the colors of the institution. The associate’s and bachelor’s robes are black with long pointed sleeves. The master’s is black with oblong sleeves which are closed; the arm comes through a slit in the sleeve. The doctor’s robe has long, full sleeves, velvet facing on the front and at the neck, and three velvet bars across each of the sleeves. The velvet on the doctor’s robe may be black, or it may be the color which symbolizes the degree held.

The usual cap, proper for all degrees, is the black mortarboard, although some colleges use the beret. Tassels, usually black, are worn over the left front quarter of the cap. Holders of the doctorate may wear tassels of gold thread.

The most distinctive feature of American academic dress is the hood, which indicates by its color and design the wearer’s degree and the institution that conferred the degree. Hoods vary in length according to the specific degree. The bachelor’s hood is about three feet long, and that of the master’s degree is slightly longer, while the doctoral hood is long and colorful with broad panels. The hood is lined with the color of the college or university granting the degree. It is faced with a color indicating the subject of specialization.

Degrees with Honors
Students graduating with a baccalaureate degree and earning a 4.0 grade point average are awarded the President’s Medal of Honor.

The baccalaureate degree is awarded summa cum laude, with highest honor, to any student whose official cumulative grade point average is at least 3.900; magna cum laude, with great honor, if the official cumulative grade point average is 3.700 to 3.899; and cum laude, with honor, if the official cumulative grade point average is 3.500 to 3.699.

The University Honors Award is bestowed upon students who have completed the advanced curriculum of the University Honors Program, which includes opportunities for international study and for original research contribution to the chosen field of study. Recipients of the University Honors Award have completed at least 24 hours of honors coursework, including public defense of Honors thesis research.

Graduate students who earn an overall grade point average of 4.000 in all courses pursued toward their graduate degree are recognized for this achievement as honor graduates.

* The asterisk before a name identifies members of the Nicholls chapter of the national Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Academically outstanding juniors, seniors, and graduate students from all disciplines are eligible for election to membership.
♦ The diamond before a name identifies students who successfully complete the curriculum of the University Honors Program. These graduates wear the red-ribboned University Honors Award medal.

Program Disclaimer
Appearance of a name in this program is presumptive evidence of graduation but is not regarded as conclusive. Students whose names are listed twice in this program are receiving two degrees. Due to the late applications, the names of some graduates who are graduating are not listed in the program.
