The Family Service Center was established in 1998 through a  contract awarded to the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences at Nicholls State University from the Department of Children & Family Services to offer both assisted referrals and supportive services to bring Louisiana into compliance with the requirements of the Adoptions & Safe Families Act of 1997.

Since 2007, the center has received funding from the South Central Louisiana Human Services Authority to provide clinically based, preventative services to youth who are identified as at-risk for mental health issues and to assist in the reduction of psychiatric hospitalizations and long-term mental health treatment.  In addition, the South Central Louisiana Human Services Authority funds the Child-Adolescent Response Team (CART), a 24 hour crisis intervention program for children and families.
