Civilized Shout Outs

by Donney Rose

smile harder
cry in your casket
make your teeth a place mat
they will grind their dirty feet
into your smile most times
wince when they are not looking
look around your new home
dance like you’re happy
sing like you’re happy
there’s dynamite in your cocktail
toast to new beginnings
be content
give thanks
thank whomever brought you here
you could’ve been left in the ignorance of you
thank them for civilizing you
for shaping your prayers
in their image
pray to your new god
you were once the dirtiest sin
now you’ve been reborn
you will die again
soon enough
