Clock Affirmations

by Jose Araguz

Children, go make faces:
a prize will go to the one
who comes closest to
the face of a clock. Practice
making your eyebrows meet,
and licking your lips. Be sure
to leave a crumb or two
on your chin. Milk moustaches
are allowed only if
they never dry. Remember,
a clock’s face in a painting
is often dashed into place,
quick strokes, hard lines, numbers
where so much goes unfinished:
on every face, there are lines
that won’t stop moving.
