Port of South Louisiana Donates to Nicholls Farm to Support Coastal Restoration

The Port of South Louisiana donated $18,000 to the Nicholls Farm for the fifth year in a row to advance research in coastal restoration. 

Food Management: Food service chefs craft plant-based food with something for everyone

The Food Management website featured Roots, a station in Galliano Dining Hall, which offers sauteed-to-order whole grains, pastas, roasted veggies, beans, herbs and meat alternatives.

Nicholls Biology Professor Publishes Research on Coastal Vegetation

A common Gulf Coast vegetation may be shifting ecosystems because of climate change, according to a recently published study by a Nicholls State University professor.

Alum Named Interim Auxiliary Services Director

Margo Badeaux (BS ‘11, MBA ‘14) has been named interim director of Auxiliary Services at Nicholls State University.  She replaces Bruce Clute, who left the position in November of 2020.

Badeaux has served in various roles since she joined Nicholls in 2009. In 2018 she became the director of business services where, in addition to her normal role within the Office of Finance and Administration, she has managed various special projects on campus, including capital improvement, financial planning projects and the COVID-19 response team. 

Nicholls Biology Professor Speaks at Distinguished Lecture Series

Dr. Raj Boopathy, Alcee Fortier Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences, recently delivered an invited talk “Cellulosic Ethanol and Microbial Lipids as Biofuel” at the Distinguished Lecture Series for the Malaysian Universities organized by the University of Technology Malaysia in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.

Come and Learn About the Old Ways of Healing

Marlene Breaux Toups will host a workshop about French healing traditions. She is a native of the central Lafourche area and a resident of Thibodaux who learned many of the methods and materials used in the old-time ways of healing from family members. 

Toups will share her knowledge through two ZOOM programs, first in French, at 5:30 p.m. on March 9 and then in English at 5:30 p.m. on March 23. Anyone may join either or both programs by registering in advance at traiteuse2021@gmail.com to receive a link to join the program. 

Both programs are free to the public. Please specify which programs you wish to attend. The duration of each program is approximately one hour. For more information, feel free to call Dr. Robin White at 448-4854.

The event is sponsored by the Louisiana Folklore Society and the Louisiana Division of the Arts Folklife Program.

UPDATED: Student Government Association Sponsoring Supply Drive for Student

The SGA is sponsoring an emergency supply drive for a student whose family suffered a house fire that destroyed everything they own. The drop off location is the student union. The family is in immediate need of toiletries, bedding, towels, food, drink, plates, utensils and clothes. The size range for the family, all women sizes, for tops is small, 4x and 2x; pants size 5, 4x and 18; shoes, 7, 11 and 9; undergarments 7, 12 and 9. After they find a place to live, the family will need furniture, small appliances and other household items.

Business Professors To Present Tax Cut Research at Conference

Dr. Yu Zhang, assistant professor of accounting, Dr. Xun Li, professor of management, Andrea Chiasson, instructor of business administration and Dr. Shari Lawrence, professor of finance will be presenting their paper “The Effect of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on Corporate Debt Ratios” at the Academy of Business Research Conference in New Orleans in March.

Spring Election Deadlines

Nominations are due for Mr. and Ms. Nicholls by 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 5 to the SGA Office in Suite 14 of the Student Union. Nominees must be carrying at least 7 hours or more, have completed 85 semester hours at the end of the Fall semester, and have a 2.5 overall GPA. Graduate students meeting qualifications are eligible.

Petitions to run for an SGA and Student Programing Association office are due at Noon by Thursday, March 11 at the SGA office. 

Nomination packets and election petitions are available in the SGA and SPA offices.

Scholars Expeaux Calls for Abstracts

This March, Nicholls will host Scholars Expeaux 2021, a virtual showcase of student research and creative activity presented by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. All Nicholls students who have or are in the process of completing projects are invited to submit abstracts. Scholarship awards are available for the best presentations in a variety of categories.

Research and creative activities include many things such as course projects, independent and group research, service learning projects and extramural activities (including summer workshops and internships). We have creative experts that can help you create a visually stimulating and informative submission that students, faculty, competition judges and viewers from the community can appreciate and understand.
